When I was in my early 20s, I was suffering from pain during sexual intercourse. As you can imagine, this was an incredibly isolating time for me. I also began experiencing urinary leakage during exercise. I had always been an active person and felt like I was in decent shape so I didn't know why I was having these symptoms. And this was before the days of TikTok & Instagram so not many people were talking about Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy!
Luckily for me, I had a wonderful gynecologist who referred me to a local Pelvic Floor PT. Hopefully you can guess the end to this story. She was able to help me resolve my symptoms, which dramatically changed my life for two reasons. The first is that I was able to fully enjoy exercise & intimacy again, which significantly improved my quality of life! And she also changed the trajectory of my career.
While I was her patient, I was already working as both a Personal Trainer and a Pilates Instructor, and was thinking of becoming a Physical Therapist. However, at the time, I thought that if I became a PT, I'd like to work with traditional sports injuries (remember that I didn't even know what Pelvic Floor PT was). But my experience as a Pelvic Floor patient opened my eyes to this wonderful specialty and I knew then that I was meant to do this work. I had been given the incredible gift of pelvic health and now I wanted to give that gift to as many women as I could!
